During the past decade, countless San Antonio residents found a sanctuary and path to greater physical, mental and emotional wellbeing at Yoga in Motion, founded by Effie Wood, one of the treasured “grande dames” within the local yoga scene. When Wood announced her retirement earlier this year, Yoga in Motion faithful lamented the closing of her Castle Hills studio.
Thankfully, Yoga in Motion’s doors will not close, and new owner Terry Ruel hopes to infuse the studio and the surrounding community with renewed energy and his passion for yoga.
Meet Ruel and his Yoga in Motion team at the studio’s “Grand Re- Opening” on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 12-3 p.m. Studio instructors, including Ruel, will provide yoga demos, and the event will include freebies and refreshments.
Ruel says he has been a “yogi” for more than four decades, and he has been teaching locally for about four years. Owning his own studio is the fulfillment of a dream, he says.
“Sometimes there are things you feel like you are supposed to do – this was one of those,” he says. Ruel does not plan to change the studio or the Yoga in Motion experience, which emphasizes “Vinyasa flow” and leans toward the “softer” side of yoga. Ruel, who recently moved within walking distance of the studio, says he is eager to introduce new residents to the studio and to the many benefits of regular yoga and meditative practice.
