National Initiative Focuses on Getting Kids Moving, Healthy Eating
The San Antonio Museum of Art is officially a Let’s Move! Museum. That’s a fitting designation for one of the city’s most popular destinations for lovers of art and creative expression. Let’s Move! is a national initiative started in 2010 by First Lady Michelle Obama to get kids moving and eating healthy foods.
“We took a look at our programs and realized that many of them align with the Let’s Move! initiative,” says Nicole McLeod, assistant director of Education/ Family & Community Programs. “With 64,000 feet of galleries and a 13-acre campus on the San Antonio river, our museum is a place where it is easy to be active, and we certainly support the idea of healthy body, healthy mind.”
Programs that align with Let’s Move! include the free monthly Art Fit: Talk + Exercise, which includes a short gallery talk on fitness followed by a run/walk with coaches from Run Wild Sports, the weekly Saturday Meditation in the Japanese Garden, which teaches relaxation and meditation techniques, and Playdates, a weekly program for toddlers that includes movement, music and art projects.
SAMA is located at 200 W. Jones Ave. in downtown San Antonio. For more information, including information on exhibits and the museum’s extensive activity schedule, visit www.samuseum.org.
