On Sept. 7 the San Antonio community will welcome the latest addition to the west side of Phil Hardberger Park (NW Military entrance). The Urban Ecology Center, an educational and working ecological system in the midst of the city, is a $5 million project designed to educate residents on the importance of preserving wild plants and animals.
It will serve as an urban ecology learning facility for the South Texas region, and the hope for the new center is that it will inspire future generations to care for ecological systems within the urban environment. The new center will offer educational programs to schools and youth groups and will provide adult lectures, workshops, discussions and weekend family programs. Programs will focus on botany, wildlife, general ecology and connecting people with nature through hands-on discovery. For the Sept. 7 event, the center will hold nature hikes beginning at 8 a.m. with a special grand opening program starting at 10 a.m.
