Ancient peoples used gourds as food and medicinal containers, and while they are still occasionally used for practical purposes, they can also be transformed into beautiful works of art. The Lone Star Gourd Festival, a three-day interactive event for families, starts Friday, Aug. 19, in New Braunfels and will feature many aspects of gourd art.
The festival invites participants to learn the artistic techniques that create a work of gourd art. Activities include: Gourd Raffle: Raises funds used to promote gourd art educational outreach. Gourd art competition: Open to artists at all levels and includes various categories.
- Demonstrations: Demo booths will be open daily in the vendor area. Texas Gourd Society members will show visitors how to grow, harvest, clean, cut, color and design gourds.
- Kids Corner: Children 18 and under can decorate their own gourd in the Kids’ Corner booth.
- Vendor booths: Learn about gourd art, and purchase tools, supplies, raw gourds and gourd art.
- Gourd classes: Offered Wednesday, Aug. 17, through Sunday, Aug. 21.
