The San Antonio Herb Market Association puts the spotlight on Basil, the “herb of the summer,” during Basil Fest at Pearl Farmers Market on May 21. Basil Fest is a free event that celebrates basil and encourages participants to learn how to grow and cook with the familiar herb.
Participants will enjoy seminars on growing basil, live cooking demonstrations, a children’s basil potting event and a “Chef’s Challenge,” which brings local chefs together in a cookoff to create a basil-based recipe fitting the theme “Spreads and Breads.” Basil plants and informational resources will also be available for purchase.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Returning Heroes Home, a non-profit group that is working to create a therapeutic garden at the Warrior and Family Support Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.
Pearl Farmers Market is located at the historic Pearl Brewery, 312 Pearl Parkway. Basil Fest takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 21. For more information, visit www.atpearl.com.
