San Antonio brings the bright lights of India to the River Walk with the celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Lights (or Deepavali). This ancient Hindu festival is celebrated each autumn and is the biggest festival in India.
Spiritually, Diwali symbolizes the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
San Antonio’s Diwali celebration, in its 8th year, is the only city-sanctioned event of its kind in the nation and draws more than 15,000 people from all over Texas. The festival starts at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, at La Villita on the River Walk and moves into the evening with a variety of cultural options, including 2,000 floating diyas, an area for dancing, vendor booths, Indian cuisine and a fireworks display to top off the celebration.
DiwaliSA is a free event. For more information, visit www.diwalisa.com.
