In my practice, one of the most common things I hear is, “I never had allergy or sinus problems until I moved to San Antonio.” If this is you, I’m happy to tell you that your regular allergy and sinus problems could become a thing of the past, without pills or sprays or drops of any kind. How? Well, let me introduce you to Tim. Tim suffered from allergies his entire life.
Around the same time every year, allergies hit him like a truck. He had all the itchy, watery, sneezy symptoms, followed by sinus infections that were soon followed by a round of drugs.
Then Tim discovered chiropractic. He actually came to my practice because of pain, but he soon discovered that chiropractic care and adjustments helped a lot more than just pain. To his amazement, through regular adjustments he was not only able to mow his yard without difficulty, he was also not getting the congestion or the runny nose and itchy eyes that usually had him running for his daily dose of antihistamine.
Thanks to chiropractic, Tim has gone through an entire flu season without so much as a sniffle. How is this possible? In a nutshell, it’s because a strong, healthy immune system is the best defense against allergies, infections and the many communicable diseases that our bodies encounter on a daily basis.
Research has shown that chiropractic patients who participate in some type of maintenance plan have an immune system that is 200 percent stronger than the average person. The immune system is the body’s defense system designed to fight off bacterial infections, viral infections, the flu, cancer or anything else that may try to harm you.
The nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and immune system are intertwined and work congruently for the body to adapt and heal appropriately. Neurological dysfunction caused by spinal subluxations is stressful to the body and causes abnormal changes that lead to a poorly coordinated immune response. Subluxation is the term for misalignments of the spine that compress and irritate nerve pathways affecting organ systems in the body.
Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to boost the coordinated responses of the nervous system and immune system. If your body is working properly, your resistance to germs, dust, temperature changes and other stressors is higher. As Tim discovered, a healthy body has properly draining sinuses.
Relieving stress on the nervous system and body structure will help your body work more efficiently and help ensure that the skull bones move freely and “breathe,” permitting body fluids to drain without interference. Along with the adjustment, other treatments involve soft massage of the nose, forehead and cheeks, to release the pressure on the sinus cavities and allow for free drainage of fluids. It worked for Tim and can work for you, too!
