Hormone Health: Focus on the Core Elements of Good Health, and the Essential Oils that Help Support Those Core Elements

by Ashley Stone

Many people do not realize how important hormones are to their physical and emotional health. There are more than 200 hormones in the body performing hundreds of different jobs. Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers; they travel in your bloodstream to communicate with organs or tissues.

Almost every activity in our body is controlled by hormones; they dictate our digestion, our physical drives, our growth, our energy level and how much we weight, to name a few.

Hormone Balance

The hormone system is very complex and requires the appropriate building blocks to function optimally. You can provide many of the needed building blocks through your lifestyle choices. Focusing on a healthy lifestyle will help keep your hormones in balance.

The core elements for maintaining general health—nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep, hydration and toxic load reduction—are the same for supporting your hormonal system. To maintain your hormonal balance, it is important to keep a balance of these core lifestyle elements.

Here are lifestyle choices that affect your hormonal balance, together with some essential oils to help support your hormonal balance.

1. Nutrition

Eating the right foods provides the nutrients needed for your body to produce hormones. The building blocks that the body uses to create hormones are high-quality proteins, beneficial fats and nutrient-dense vegetables.

Essential oils that can help:

Grapefruit and Peppermint: These oils promote healthy metabolism and help manage hunger cravings.

Fennel: This oil is known for its ability to promote healthy metabolism and circulation.

Ginger: This oil supports healthy digestion and may help to reduce bloating, gas and occasional indigestion.

2. Exercise

Regular exercise is fundamental to your health and vitality. Exercise can cause hormonal changes by stimulating the release of specific hormones, which in turn create a corresponding impact on a number of body systems. Overall, some changes due to exercise are considered beneficial; however, you must be careful because overexerting yourself can have negative effects. In most cases moderate amounts of exercise produce positive effects. Look for ways to incorporate exercise into your weekly routine, and make it a habit.

Essential oils that can help:

  •  Peppermint: This oil can help improve breathing.
  •  Marjoram: This oil is relaxing and calming to muscles.
  •  Lemongrass: This oil provides soothing support for ligaments and joints.

3. Stress Management

Stress can negatively affect your health and your moods. When you are in a state of stress, your body goes into a “fight or flight” mode and responds by releasing many hormones into your system. This is a good response when you are truly in danger, but not for a normal state. In today’s high-stress world, our systems are operating in the “fight or flight” mode for prolonged periods of time. Because of this, we need to have a conscious stress management plan. Healthy stress management ideas include exercise, massage, meditation, relaxation and recreation.

Essential oils that can help:

  •  Basil: This oil can reduce anxious feelings, reduces tension when applied to the temples and back of the neck.
  •  Lavender: This oil is relaxing and calming and can be taken internally to reduce anxious feelings; it also promotes sleep and helps ease feelings of tension.
  •  Melissa: This oil calms tension and nerves and promotes feeling of relaxation. Diffuse at night or rub on forehead, shoulders or chest to help lessen feelings of stress and promote emotional well-being.
  • Geranium: This oil helps calm nerves and lessens feeling of stress.

4. Sleep

Sleep is vitally important for hormone balance and maintaining proper weight and blood sugar regulation. Getting the right amount of sleep should be high priority for maintaining optimal health.

Essential oils that can help:

  • Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Clary Sage: These oils are calming and help promote a good night’s sleep.
  • Vetiver: This oil is a natural tranquilizer and is known to have a positive effect on the parathyroid gland and the brain.
  • Ylang Ylang: This oil lifts your mood while giving you calming and relaxing feelings that supports restful sleep.
