Primates cast off from the pet trade and biomedical research institutions have a sanctuary in Bexar County at the Primarily Primates facility near Boerne and Leon Springs. You can support the sanctuary and the primates living there by participating in the Aug. 2 “Hoedown for the Primates” at Green Vegetarian Cuisine in the Pearl Brewery.

The event will include “cruelty-free” food, wine, live bluegrass music and a silent auction benefiting the animals at Primarily Primates.

Primarily Primates is a nonprofit organization that provides lifetime care and housing for homeless, abused and abandoned animals, mostly primates. Animals at the refuge include chimpanzees once used in space training and testing, and a chimp once paraded on TV shows as the “humanzee” due to a habit of walking upright. The sanctuary is not open to the general public and does not breed, sell, trade or use animals commercially.

The Aug. 2 Hoedown begins at 7 p.m. at Green Vegetarian, 200 E. Grayson, 78215. Tickets are $60 per person or $100 for two. For tickets, call 830-755-4616. For more information about Primarily Primates, visit www.primarilyprimates.org.
