Maybe you’ve seen one or two community gardens pop up around San Antonio in your travels around town. You may not realize that there are actually 38 community gardens in the San Antonio area that are flourishing thanks to guidance and support from the Green Spaces Alliance’s Community Gardens Program. The alliance relies on community support to continue to “cultivate” and “grow” its Community Gardens Program, and now is the ideal time to contribute to the program.
For a limited time, thanks to a generous donation from the Kronkosky Foundation, every dollar donated to the alliance’s Community Gardens Program will be matched dollar for dollar up to $50,000 – so your kind gift goes twice as far! Gifts up to $50,000 will be matched through Aug. 15. Participating in the Community Gardens Program, which began with one garden in 2006, is worthwhile on many levels. Few efforts and contributions provide such tangible and beautiful results. Community gardens provide a catalyst for neighborhood development, they stimulate social interaction, they beautify neighborhoods and produce nutritious food, they create opportunities for recreation, exercise and education, and they reduce crime and preserve green space.
