Most new small businesses don’t have to overcome the obstacles faced by the owners of CommonWealth Coffeehouse & Bakery on Davis Court, just off Broadway. You’ve probably heard the saga: Jorge Herrero purchased the run-down home on Davis Court, which was marked “commercial” on the city zoning map.
With significant investment, Herrero and others turned the home into a coffee shop located just behind the Wash Tub on Broadway. Just weeks before opening, city staffers discovered a 30-yearold mistake on the city’s zoning map – the property was actually zoned “residential,” which meant the coffee shop couldn’t open.
Months later, following timeconsuming and emotionally draining meetings with various city officials and with neighbors and members of their neighborhood association, the zoning issue is resolved, and the little CommonWealth Coffeehouse opened in late January. It’s an amazing nailbiting and hair-pulling experience that makes a visit to CommonWealth Coffeehouse well worth the trip and so much more than just a quick jaunt for coffee.
CommonWealth Coffeehouse & Bakery is located at 118 Davis Ct. For more information visit www. commonwealthcoffeehouse.com.
