The Girls on the Run 5K spring session sprints into action on Sunday, May 15, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Park. This annual event is a chance for girls of all ages and economic backgrounds to experience joy and confidence through running; it also encourages lifelong health and fitness. The event is open to the public, and all are welcome to participate.
Girls on the Run, a non-profit program for girls in the 3rd through 8th grades, inspires young women through an experience-based curriculum, which combines lessons that enhance problemsolving skills and decision-making with training for a 5K running event. Completing the yearly 5K gives girls the understanding and confidence that comes through accomplishment, as well as giving them a platform on which to set and achieve life goals. When one crosses the finish line, she finds that the impossible is actually possible. Proceeds from the race help fund the organization’s scholarship program.
