Need an incentive to get your family off the couch and away from the screen this summer? How does $25,000 in cash and prizes sound? That’s what’s available for participants in the 2015 Fit Family Challenge, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. The Fit Family Challenge offi cially began in May but continues through Aug. 15 at a number of park and school venues throughout the city.
The summer fitness challenge is intended to support Bexar County families in their efforts to be more physically active and eat healthier foods.
“We know that being active, enjoying regular family meals and finding an activity that you enjoy are all keys to infl uencing behaviors that will reduce the risks associated with diabetes, cancer, obesity and a lifetime of low self esteem,” says Russ Bookbinder, president and CEO of San Antonio Sports, which has organized the annual Fit Family Challenge since 2010.
Participation in the challenge is free, and families are welcome to participate as much as they are able. The challenge features free weekly workouts at seven area locations (Zumba for ages 13 and up; a Kid Fit class for children ages 4-12), and every three weeks there’s a Big Event held on a Saturday that includes giving away a $1,000 cash prize. Participants can earn points and record their points on a tracking log. Points are earned for participation in weekly fi tness classes, receiving a free health screening and attending the Big Events. When you earn more than 400 points, you become eligible to win one of the challenge’s grand prizes.
